Community-based Projects in Engineering Courses
The challenge: create community-based learning experiences for engineering students
Design Team: Staff at Center for Community Engaged Learning and Instructors
The approach: use experiential learning methodology in refining and designing new elements for the engineering curriculum
Key learning or insights: students struggled considerably with the ambiguity of these community-based experiences and needed the most amount of guidance with defining and scoping the project
The impact of findings: These community-based projects often shaped a deep learning experience for the students and had a positive impact on them according to the feedback provided by students.
My specific role: I was the CBEL coordinator for the engineering course which meant I worked with the CBEL team and the instructors to modify curriculum elements while creating connections with community organizations and scoping out projects for students.
